Nondegree Students

Are you considering taking a class as a nondegree-seeking student? Do any of the following apply to you?

  • I want to get started now, but I haven’t been admitted to a program yet.
  • I’m worried online classes won’t work for me and want to test the waters before applying to a program.
  • I want to take a class online but will be transferring the credits to another school.

If any of the above ring true, you should consider applying to take a class as a nondegree-seeking student.

Undergraduate nondegree-seeking: If you would like to take undergraduate (bachelor’s or minor level) distance courses, but do not plan to apply to a bachelor’s, certificate or minor program at this time, you must apply to K-State as a nondegree-seeking student. Apply now by completing the undergraduate admission form.

  • You can take up to 15 credit hours as a nondegree-seeking undergraduate student.
  • The undergraduate nondegree-seeking application process takes 1-3 business days.
  • You will not be eligible for financial assistance.

Graduate restricted/nondegree-seeking: If you would like to take graduate (master’s or doctoral level) distance courses, but do not plan to apply to a master’s, doctoral or certificate program at this time, you may request permission to take classes as a restricted student. After one semester, you must apply as either a nondegree-seeking or degree-seeking student through the K-State Graduate School. Apply now by selecting a graduate course, adding it to your Class Interest List and following the prompts to complete the Graduate Nondegree Enrollment Request form.

  • You can take classes for only one semester as a restricted student.
  • You can take up to 9 credit hours as a nondegree-seeking graduate student.
  • The graduate nondegree-seeking application process takes 3-5 business days.
  • You will not be eligible for financial assistance.
  • Some programs require you to be fully admitted before you can take your first class. Visit your program of interest for restrictions.

Important Notes

  • If you apply as a nondegree or restricted student, you will not be required to pay an application fee or submit official transcripts. However, you may be required to submit unofficial transcripts if you are enrolling in:
    • a graduate course and have never taken classes at K-State
    • an undergraduate course that requires prerequisites
  • Upon approval, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to enroll.
  • Approval as a nondegree-seeking student does not guarantee acceptance to a degree program.
