Mentoring Program for Online Students

Professional mentors provide a unique opportunity for students to gain feedback, guidance and expertise in their chosen field. The College of Human Ecology developed the Professional Mentoring Program to pair current students with experienced professionals.

“Students are able to forge long-lasting professional relationships, enhance their professional skills, build their professional network and broaden their perspectives and career possibilities through this program,” said Megan Umscheid, director of the Professional Mentoring Program.

Distance students enrolled in a program through the College of Human Ecology who will be juniors, seniors or graduate students this fall can participate in the Professional Mentoring Program.

Mentoring pairs meet at least once per month in person, by phone or video conferencing until the mentee graduates. Travel grants may also be provided to enable pairs to meet in person.

In addition, the program provides newsletters, suggested readings and discussion questions from the program director; professional development training and networking events; and resources for job search strategies, resume development and interviewing skills.

If you’re interested in participating as a mentee in the Professional Mentoring Program, please complete the online mentee application form.

Free Financial Counseling

The road to financial security is paved with tough decisions: Should I take out a loan or make a lump sum payment? How do I understand the information in my credit report? What are the things to know about the benefits offered with a job?

Kansas State University’s Powercat Financial provides currently enrolled K-State distance students with a variety of free resources to help them make all of these decisions and more. Distance students can view archived workshop presentations on a variety of subjects, enroll in free courses and programs on personal finance, or schedule free one-on-one personal financial counseling sessions via Zoom. Financial counseling sessions are conducted by a trained peer financial counselor who can help you develop a plan to optimize your financial success during and after college.

“Our biggest successes are when we help a student get on track financially, allowing them to pursue their degree, or when students indicate we helped reduce their financial stress," said Jodi Kaus, director of Powercat Financial.

K-State also offers a free online financial planning tool for students and alumni called SALT. The program is available through a partnership with American Student Assistance. Sign up today to take advantage of this helpful resource.

"SALT is available free of charge to help K-State students and alumni learn how to borrow less, borrow wisely, repay loans and become financially savvy," Kaus said.

With SALT, users can:

  • learn about budgeting and financial planning
  • track all of their student loans in one place
  • compare payment plans for loans
  • use budgeting tools and calculators
  • search for jobs, internships and scholarships
  • reach out, call or live chat with SALT's student loan experts with questions

Visit the Powercat Financial website to learn more about its services.

The K-State Global Campus Student and Faculty Services unit celebrated Graduate Student Appreciation Week April 3-7, 2017, with a Facebook contest. We asked students the following question and received more than 40 positive responses. Three students were randomly selected to receive a K-State Global Campus prize package.

Being able to further my education had opened so many doors in my life and career. I am so blessed to have been a part of K-State Global Campus.

Travis Hampl: The best part of being a student in K-State Global Campus is the interaction with the wonderful, supportive and innovative students and staff. We have a chance to interact with colleagues all throughout the world in a professional and rigorous academic setting.

Jake W. Renner: I love being able to be a part of the K-State Global Campus family while maintaining a full-time career. K-State has opened so many doors professionally and scholastically. It is incredible to know that K-State Global Campus is always there to support its students both near and far. It's amazing how involved campus facilitators are with the Global Campus students. Each year, the Kansas State University community gathers together and opens its door to the general public in an effort to show what makes the K-State family so great.

This year’s Open House was held on Saturday, April 1 and themed “The Future is Built Here.” Students, parents, families and community members filled the Manhattan, Olathe and Polytechnic campuses, looking to get to know the various departments, clubs and offices that comprise K-State.

K-State Global Campus joined in this effort by distributing information, answering questions and giving away prizes throughout the day from its booth on the first floor of the K-State Student Union in Manhattan. While the majority of students taking online programs through K-State Global Campus don’t live close enough to attend, the event serves as a way to inform the greater K-State community of the services offered and the role K-State Global Campus plays in helping students reach their educational goals.

K-State Global Campus also developed Virtual Open House to help bring the campus to online learners. The website creates the experience of a campus visit for current and prospective distance education students who are unable to travel to campus. It features videos of online instructors and advisers, a campus photo tour, online program information and more.
