Joint Meeting Opening Reception – National Automobile Museum

Thursday, July 16; 6:00-9:00 p.m.

This year's Joint Meeting opening reception will be at the National Automobile Museum. The National Automobile Museum (The Harrah Collection) has a “Wow!” factor you don’t often find in a museum. You’ll see more than 200 eye-popping cars with authentic street scenes and sounds. The facades bring displays to life; a hardware store here, a movie theatre there which accompany artifacts from each era. It’s located on the corner of Lake and Mill Streets in downtown Reno.

The reception menu will consist of tri-colored tortilla chips with house-made pico de gallo; BBQ pork sliders on a brioche bun with smoked mozzarella and chipotle BBQ sauce; assorted cheeses (cheddar, papperjack,a nd Swiss) with strawberries, grapes, and assorted crackers; penne pasta in a pesto cream sauce with asiago cheese, basil chiffonade and fresh tomatoes; and assorted cookies (dark chocolate chunk and white chocolate with macadamia nut). The reception ticket includes two drink tickets good for beer or wine.

The SWPARC/HL live auction is an opportunity to support the programs of SWPARC and HL and to clean out your office or house of those interesting and valuable herp or fish related items. Any herp or fish related item - including books, art, sculptures, famous autographs, field equipment, or clothing - is appreciated. Please note that items made from amphibians, reptiles, fish, or parts thereof, should NOT be donated. Donations are tax deductible. Receipts will be issued on request (please request receipt at time of donation). If you are interested in donating to the Live Auction, please contact Kim Lovich at for more information.

AES Banquet – The Whitney Peak Hotel

On Sunday, July 19 from 6:00 p.m. until midnight, the American Elasmobranch Society Banquet will be held in the Cargo Room of the Whitney Peak Hotel located at 255 North Virginia Street. The social hour will start at 6:00 p.m., with dinner served at 7:00 p.m. The menu is still being determined. Wine will be served with dinner, plus cash bars will be available.

ASIH Closing Picnic – UNR Campus

On Sunday, July 19 from 6:00-9:00 p.m., join friends and colleagues at the on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno for the ASIH Closing Picnic. A picnic dinner will be served with regular and vegetarian burgers, hot dogs, chips, cookies, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages. Each ticket includes two free drink tickets with each meal.

Field Trips

Herp Trip to Pyramid Lake

Monday, July 20; 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Field Trip from the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino (GSR) to Pyramid Lake to view desert reptiles endemic to the Great Basin and the West. The trip will be lead by Chris Gienger and Robert Espinoza, former UNR graduate students that know the area and herpetofauna well. They will assist in capture and release for photos, help with ID's, and provide local natural history.


  • 8:00 a.m.: load into UNR vans from GSR
  • 9:00 a.m.: herp along SW portion of Pyramid Lake
  • 12:00 p.m.: Lunch (boxed lunch)
  • 1:00 p.m.: arrive back at GSR

$18/person. Price includes sandwiches and chips from Jimmy Johns, and helps cover day-use fees and UNR vans.

To Bring:
Light clothing, hat, field worthy shoes, sunscreen, water, camera, and any herp gear you have. We will supply rods and filament for noosing.

Mountain Bike Tour on Tahoe Rim Trail Overlooking Lake Tahoe

Monday, July 20; 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Mountain bike tour on the Tahoe Rim Trail, from Tahoe Meadows (8740') near Mount Rose, to the Flume Trial above Lake Tahoe, and then down to Lake Tahoe (6230') via the Marlette Creek Trail. Approximately 17 miles total, with a few short climbs, and several technical portions with granite steps, switchbacks, and sandy sections. The ride is for intermediate to advanced riders in reasonable condition. The trip will be lead by Stan Blum, Brian Simison, Kevin de Queiroz, and Chris Feldman. They will coach the less experienced riders and assist as appropriate.


  • 9:00 AM: load into UNR vans from GSR
  • 10:00 AM: rent bikes at "Flume Trail" in Incline Village.
  • 11:00 AM: Begin ride at Tahoe Meadows (near Mount Rose)
  • 2:00 PM: Complete ride at Lake Tahoe
  • 3:00 PM: arrive back at GSR

$ 18 / person. Price includes sandwiches and chips from Jimmy Johns, and helps cover cost of transport in UNR vans.

Note: if you need a bike, we will take you to the rental shop in Incline Village (Flume Trail) the day of the ride. Prices range from $35-70 day:

To Bring:
Light clothing, sunscreen, water (1 -2 L), and snacks. You will also need to bring a mountain bike and helmet, or rent these the day of the ride (see above).

If there is interest (and time), we can stop at Sand Harbor, and relax at the beach. There are food stands and drinks at the beach, which is one of the most scenic along Lake Tahoe.
