Summer scholarships help Kansas State University Global Campus students

Monday, July 11, 2016

Kansas State University Global Campus has awarded 15 scholarships totaling $14,200 to degree-seeking distance students from across the U.S. for the summer 2016 semester.

These scholarships assist distance education students in achieving their educational goals by providing financial support to complete their degrees. Many distance students take classes part time and are ineligible for the majority of scholarships offered to full-time traditional students. Scholarships awarded for the summer semester include the K-State Global Campus Scholarship for Distance Education Students, as well as scholarships provided in collaboration with Kansas State University colleges and departments.

David Delzeit, a junior in dietetics, Colby, was one of two recipients of the Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Health Scholarship for Distance Education Students. Delzeit, who enrolled in the program at the age of 40, said one of the biggest challenges he has faced was also the first he overcame: making the decision to enroll and then following through.

"The scholarships have strengthened my resolve when I have needed it the most in supporting my efforts to juggle family, employment, school and, yes, those moments to relax and just breathe," Delzeit said. "It's interesting how even through internet-based classes you can feel supported by professors in a way that challenges you to think beyond your initial goal, to challenge your thinking and to help you see the strength in your skills."

Along with Delzeit, the following students received summer scholarships:

Jessica Bauerle, master's student in curriculum and instruction, Hiawatha, College of Education Scholarship for Distance Education Students; Nicole Hamler, senior in general business, Junction City, College of Business Administration Scholarship for Distance Education Students; Kyle House, senior in general business, Salina, College of Business Administration Scholarship for Distance Education Students; and Amy O'Grady, senior in food science and industry, Wathena, Global Campus Scholarship for Distance Education Students.

From out of state:

Jacqueline Wilson, master's student in academic advising, Englewood, Colorado, College of Education Scholarship for Distance Education Students; Claudia Nunez, junior in interdisciplinary social science, Tampa, Florida, College of Arts & Sciences Scholarship for Distance Education Students; Joleen Murray, senior in nutrition and health, Vandalia, Illinois, Global Campus Scholarship for Distance Education Students; Catherine Brown, senior in general human ecology, Errol, New Hampshire, Global Campus Scholarship for Distance Education Students; Beth Elkin, master's student in academic advising, Corrales, New Mexico, Global Campus Scholarship for Distance Education Students; Crystal Rhodes, senior in animal sciences and industry, Lewiston, New York, College of Agriculture Scholarship for Distance Education Students; Rebecca Giertz, master's student in industrial and organizational psychology, Albany, Ohio, College of Arts & Sciences Scholarship for Distance Education Students; Lori Schrader, senior in family studies and human services, Lebanon, Ohio, Global Campus Scholarship for Distance Education Students; and Camille Osborne, senior in dietetics,Powell, Wyoming, Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Health Scholarship for Distance Education Students.
